Problem
What is the difference between XPS and EPS? EPS will absorb more water than XPS. Another point of difference is the cheaper white EPS has lower compressive strength, 75kPa versus 250kPa plus (700kPa DOW Floormate).
Theory
The cells or the beads holds water between the beads – like when water gets into chalk.
Application/Solution
Cold stores should use XPS (extruded polystyrene) for freezer floors. There is lower energy consumption and less potential cracking caused by creep of crushing by using 250-350kPa XPS foam, steel and screed.
