Hospitals are big energy-hungry footprints. It’s not only about compliance but longevity.
Problem
The insulation needs to be in a place where it won’t interfere with the services, or cause health issues by off-gassing irritants like formaldehyde or fibre.
Theory
The best place to minimise condensation issues is to insulate on the outside of the structure.
Application/Solution
The insulation needed to last more than 50 years. Unlike bulk fibre or EPS, XPS is more water resistant, while also being resistant to mould growth. A ballast is used to keep the insulation in place and act as an ignition barrier.
More insulation was required in the suspended floor above the carpark. So the simple solution was to use PIR boards.
As smoke and fire become bigger issues, the next generation of designs from De Silva Solutions will look to install XPS above the floor, sandwiched under a screed. DOW now recommends 60mm screed, up from 50mm. It’s recommended that a structural engineer be consulted as most XPS fall between 250-400kPa (700kPa is a special order).
By using a thin insulation to achieve R3 in 60mm, PIR is easy to
work with and allows for other services to fit without worrying
about following trades ripping and damaging the insulation.
Installing insulation above the slab is the best method to improve energy efficiency, reduce condensation risk, protect the waterproofing and slab from expansion and contraction.
